Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty Ltd (GEMCO) operates a Manganese mining, processing and shipping facility on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Groote Eylandt is approximately 640km east south east of Darwin, and about 48km from the east coast of Arnhem Land. It covers an area of some 2,264 square km and is Australia’s third largest island.

 NRG Industrial were engaged to install and commission the power, instrumentation, control and associated equipment to enable automation of the stacker at the port and the remote loading of road haulage from the product and reject bins. The scope of this project included the supply of all tools, equipment, material, labour and engineering required to complete the project.  This required upgrades to the following facilities

  • Concentrator Product & Reject Bins Works
  • PH1 Control Room Works
  • Mine Access Control (MAC) Gatehouse Works
  • Dump Station 2 Works
  • ST201 Stacker Works
  • PLC and SCADA Integration
  • LV power, control and communications cables

The scope of works included installation and commissioning of

  • Cable tray, conduits, field instrumentation mounts
  • Traffic signals
  • Truck detector instrumentation
  • Loading and bin indicator lamps
  • Design manufacture and install new Main Control Panels
  • Design manufacture and install new Local Control Stations
  • Modifications to existing MCC/PLC panels and gear plate installation
  • Installation and modifications of instrumentation and control systems
  • product and reject bin cameras and lighting
  • Ore sorter and associated equipment
  • Power, control and communications cables from field devices to MCC/PLC Panel
  • Network modifications
  • PLC and SCADA Integration

Works were scheduled to be completed outside plant shutdowns where possible to reduce downtime and the remainder of works were scheduled to coincide with existing plant shutdowns.
